SDI Instructor Development Course (IDC)
Ready to turn your passion for diving into the ability to train the next generation of divers? The SDI Instructor Development Course (IDC) at Scuba Adventures prepares experienced Divemasters and Assistant Instructors to become confident, capable SDI Open Water Scuba Instructors.
Through structured workshops, hands-on teaching practice, and real-world training scenarios, candidates develop the skills needed to effectively teach scuba diving while maintaining the highest standards of safety and professionalism.
The IDC prepares candidates for the SDI Instructor Evaluation Course (IEC), where instructor candidates demonstrate their readiness to become certified SDI instructors.

Prerequisites
- Minimum age: 18 years
- Certified SDI Divemaster or Assistant Instructor (or equivalent)
- Minimum of 100 logged dives
- Current CPR, First Aid, and Oxygen Provider certification (within 24 months)
Watermanship Assessment
Before enrolling, Scuba Adventures requires candidates to complete the following watermanship skills:
- 10-minute survival float (no swim aids)
- 400-meter nonstop surface swim under 10 minutes (goggles allowed)
- 800-meter swim with mask, snorkel, and fins under 17 minutes (no arms)
What to Expect
Throughout the IDC, candidates receive personalized coaching, structured workshops, and practical teaching opportunities designed to prepare them for real-world instruction. The program builds confidence in presenting theory, demonstrating skills, and managing students both in confined water and open water environments.
After Certification
After successfully completing the IDC and passing the Instructor Evaluation Course, you will be able to teach SDI Open Water Scuba Diver and other continuing education courses such as Advanced Adventure Diver and Rescue Diver. Becoming an SDI Instructor opens the door to teaching, mentoring divers, and joining a global community of diving professionals.
