SDI Instructor Development Course (IDC) Summary
The SDI Instructor Development Course (IDC) is designed to prepare Divemasters and Assistant Instructors to become full SDI Open Water Scuba Diving Instructors. The IDC consists of academic sessions, practical training in both confined and open water, and is followed by the Instructor Evaluation Course (IEC).
Course Components
- Academic Training: Candidates learn about SDI’s teaching philosophy, standards, and procedures. This includes understanding how to teach theory and conduct classroom sessions.
- Confined Water Training: Practical sessions in a pool or controlled environment where candidates practice teaching and skill demonstrations.
- Open Water Training: Real-world application of teaching methods in open water, with a focus on safety, communication, and student engagement.
Prerequisites
- Minimum age of 18 years.
- Certified as an SDI Divemaster or Assistant Instructor (or equivalent from a recognized organization).
- Proof of at least 100 logged dives in various environments and depths.
- Current certification in CPR, First Aid, and O2 Provider (not older than 24 months).
- Scuba Adventures requires all candidates to attempt the watermanship skills before enrolling in the class:
- Perform a 10-minute survival-float, without the use of swimming aids.
- 400-metre swim on the surface, non-stop, any stroke, without the use of swimming aids, in less than 10 minutes; swim goggles permitted
- 800-metre swim with mask, snorkel, and fins non-stop without the use of arms in less than 17 minutes.
What to Expect
Throughout the IDC, candidates will gain confidence in teaching theory and practical skills, preparing them for the Instructor Evaluation Course (IEC). With personalized attention and workshops, candidates will develop the tools necessary to excel as diving instructors.
